چکیده

Abstract: Mercury is considered one of the most toxic elements for plants and animals. Nevertheless, in the Middle East, Asia and Latin America, whitening creams containing mercury have been manufactured and purchased despite their confirmed health risks. Due to mass distribution, this can be considered a global public health issue. In Mexico, these products are widely available in pharmacies, beauty aid stores and health stores. They are primarily used by women for their skin lightening effects. Mercury salts inhibit melanin formation by competing with copper in tyrosinase. The aim of this work was to analyze the mercury content in some cosmetic whitening creams using the cold vapor technique coupled with atomic absorption spectrometry (CV-AAS). Preliminary studies were conducted in order to evaluate several digestion methods. The results showed that a mixture of HNO3 and H2O2 by microwave digestion provided a higher signal of mercury. A total of 16 skin-lightening creams from the local market were investigated. No warning information was noted on the packaging. In 10 of the samples, no mercury was detected. However, the mercury content of six of them varied between 780-36,000 parts per million (mg L), despite U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations that limit mercury to 1 ppm. Even so, skin creams containing mercury are still available and commonly used in Mexico and many developing countries and their contents are poorly controlled.

The Determination of Metals in Cosmetics

The U.S. FDA has not regulated metals in cosmetics except in the case that zirconium is prohibited in aerosol preparations and mercury can only be used (generally as a preservative) when no other alternative is possible. They do have the authority to protect consumers against contamination deemed to be deleterious to health. Proposition 65 in California requires notice when concentrations in a ...

Determination of mercury concentration in the air of dental clinics and the urines of their personnel with cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry

Background: Dental clinics are known to be one of the largest users of Toxic inorganic mercury. It is well documented that dentists and dental assistants who work with amalgam are chronically exposed to mercury vapor. This study investigates exposure to mercury vapor in a dental clinic. Methods: GBC cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), using sodium borohydride as the reducing age...

Metal Concentrations in Cosmetics Commonly Used in Nigeria

Trace amounts of potentially toxic metals can be either intentionally added to cosmetics or present as impurities in the raw materials. In the present study, the levels of lead, cadmium, nickel, chromium, and mercury have been assessed in 28 body creams and lotions, 10 powders, 3 soaps, 5 eye make-ups, and 4 lipsticks widely available on Nigerian markets. The increases over suggested or mandate...

Application of Solid Phase Extraction on Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes of Some Heavy Metal Ions to Analysis of Skin Whitening Cosmetics Using ICP-AES

A novel and highly sensitive method for the determination of some heavy metals in skin whitening cosmetics creams using multiwalled carbon nanotubes MWCNTs as solid phase extraction sorbent for the preconcentration of these heavy metals prior to their determination by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry is described. Different practical parameters have been thoroughly invest...
